Update: Apparently singtel wasn't the first. Many european telcos apparently did the same first. Also, have a peek at these before/after satellite shots of the disaster.
Here are a list of ways you can help those who have been affected by the tsunami.
In the USA: (or anywhere in the world, with your credit card)
Donate to the American Red Cross via Amazon.com At the time of writing over $1.8 million has been collected via this method.
The American Red Cross is also accepting donations on it's own site.
In Singapore: (only, but it's easy)
Donation hotlines are open now:
call 1900-112 1226 or SMS *1226 to make a S$10 donation
call 1900-112 1227 or SMS *1227 to make a S$50 donation.
The funds will be transferred without deduction to the Singapore Red Cross, which has managed to raise more than S$ 2.5 million so far.
In India:
The Times of India has started a tax-deductable disaster relief fund; or you can donate to the Indian Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.
There are also several sites which have sprung up to help:
http://www.moblog.com.sg/blog/help for organisations and individuals to coordinate and update their disaster relief efforts.
http://tsunamihelp.blogspot.com/ provides information about the tsunami to those who are interested. For example, it's latest post notes that the CNN has put together a database of missing people.
As a measure of what a big deal this is, the Guinness Record for the Highest Death Toll from a Tsunami was 27,000. The current death toll is 80,000. Check the current death toll easily on Google.
