While the date for the Motorola/iPhone announcement draws tantalizingly closer, it's interesting to see what has become of the iPod. As can be seen from the pictures, it is obvious that linux has been ported to it - see Podzilla. What is not so obvious is that apart from these games (which I can't imagine playing with a scroll wheel) you can also record to the iPod simply by connecting headphones [via Hack a Day]. Apparently you don't have to buy the horrible (and expensive!) iPod accessories which allow this.
But this misses the point. Sure it would be nice to have that as an added feature; but voice recording is not even one of the top-selling ipod accessories, and, let's face it, the quality of these "mutli-talented" devices isn't particularly fabulous. (yes, I know the iRiver quality is not awful, but still.) Apple probably doesn't think that including the feature makes sense; and most of the time they are nice to the little guys (who make accessories for their products).
