While we here at symplification have confined ourselves to symbian S60 devices, because of the combination of superior phone functionality (we're suckers for the nokia interface + smartphone), size, and phone-centric design aesthetic; we've suddenly seen what might be our new love - and it's name is the HTC Universal.

This device does contravene all the points above, but oh - what a paragon of Geek Lust. Let us count the ways:

This device does contravene all the points above, but oh - what a paragon of Geek Lust. Let us count the ways:

1. Windows mobile 5.0 (better outlook sync is always a boon)
2. VGA Swivel Screen (YUM!)
3. Wifi/3G/GRPS
4. 3.5mm plug
5. Full-Size SD card support.

The main problem is the size, which is somewhat expected given that the device has a proper qwerty keyboard. I suppose the Nokia answer is the Nokia 9500 Communicator; but that has no 3.5mm plug or 3G, and windows mobile 5.0 is likely to have more application support.

So, we're very very happy to see that an early reviewer seems to love his device. Jason Langride writes: "if a device/technology is really useful/amazing…. Then you won't leave home without it. If it isn't in your bag or on you… it doesn't count. So far the Universal hasn't left my side."

brrr. Anticipation... the Universal is expected to ship late Q3.
