More new Virii, and why symbian viruses are more benign.

simworksGavno.a and Gavno.b are brand new virii which can severely disable a Symbian phone to the point where it is unusable; Simworks reports [pdf] that the instability that it introduces into the phone's operating system is so severe that it effectively disables all applications on the phone and often results in the phone continually rebooting itself. It is usually named patch.sis and patch_v2.sis.

MobileTech, where I heard about this, opines that "It is now becoming essential that Symbian users should get anti-virus protection for their mobile." This is rapidly becoming more and more true because although Gavno is a trojan, Lasco-A has recently been released, and that virus can actually replicate by infecting other .sis files. Nevertheless, I suggest that anti-virus protection is still not really essential, provided that all downloads are sourced from reputable sources, OR the user is prepared to reformat the phone. Thankfully symbian doesn't (yet!) have security bugs.

I will say though, that if all computer users also abided by these same rules, the gobal virus threat would be much reduced.
