Nokia 7370 and 7360 about to be announced?

Posted On: Thu, 22/09/2005 - 12:51 by Alex

There are a variety of methods through which impending handset releases may be sussed out, including the FCC approvals and Bluetooth qualification.

Another method is through looking at UA Profiles. UA Profiles, or UAProfs, are a method through which mobile device capabilities can be confirmed. These are regularly published by most vendors; see for example the UAProf profile repository. (For more technical information, look at Mark Butler's site.)

What's interesting to us is that a UA Profiles for two devices, the Nokia 7370 and the Nokia 7360, have been made available. The original URLs are nds.nokia.com/uaprof/N7360r100.xml and nds.nokia.com/uaprof/N7370r100.xml, but they have been stored with this post in case those links cease to work.

This information is not as probative as FCC approvals or bluetooth qualifications, since vendors can publish UA Profiles at will, with little cost, but it's interesting anyhow. There are no documented instances when UA Profile releases have been false. Look at the device specifications below, according to the UA Profiles:

Nokia 7370 Specifications
QVGA (240 x 320) 262K Display A number of phones with this resolution have been announced previously
SMS, MMS
GRPS, EDGE
Bluetooth 2.0 As of this post, the phone has not qualified
Standard Nokia Browser probably means that it is a non-Symbian device; recent Symbian devices have stated their browser identity as "Mozilla"
ARM processor means nothing, as both Symbian and non-Symbian Nokia devices seem to use ARM
Video record to MPEG-4 as well as H.263 this is a big deal, because till now only the N70 and N90 seem to have this capability
Series 40 This is likely as it is programmed to accept "application/vnd.nok-s40theme" and lacks Symbian descriptors
Nokia 7360 Specifications
128x160 65K Display This is a slight improvement from the previous standard of 128x128, but is not as good as the current top for candybar phones; 208x208; as seen in the Nokia 6230i and Nokia 8800.
SMS, MMS
GRPS, EDGE
Standard Nokia Browser
Series 40 This is likely as it is programmed to accept "application/vnd.nok-s40theme" and lacks Symbian descriptors
H.263 video recording This seems to be a stripped down device. There is no mention of bluetooth, and unlike the Nokia 7370 it has no MPEG4 video encoding.

Please feel free to comment if you can make anything else out of the UA Profiles.

There is only one other mention of a Nokia 7370 on the web according to google - but it's likely to be a simple typo error. There also seem to be no "spy pics" to link to these phones.

Going by the model numbers, the Nokia 7360 and 7370 could be updates to the Nokia 7260 and 7270,fashion phone series comprising the Nokia 7260/7270/7280 was announced in September 2004. They only shipped in Q1 2005, however. The specifications support this to some extent - it would make sense for the Nokia 7370 to have a higher display resolution if it were a flip phone, and the Nokia 7360 to recieve a smaller display upgrade in the candybar form factor. Also, the Nokia 7360, like the Nokia 7260, has with no bluetooth support but has a camera. The 7*** series nokia's have also always been "fashion" phones, to some extent. (See the Nokia 7610 or Nokia 7600)

Interestingly, one of the last phones to be accurately predicted through this method is the Nokia 6670, which was announced and made available for sale in the span of a month.

The most likely occasion for announcement of new phones is the Nokia Trends Berlin, to be held on the 24th of September. That's in 2 days! If you're in the area, it might also be interesting to go watch the Chemical Brothers perform. [Ed: We've also been informed that another Nokia conference is upcoming - the Nokia Mobility Conference 2005. That will be held in Spain during November 2-3. In addition, the CTIA WIRELESS I.T. & Entertainment 2005 will be held in San Francisco on September 26-27. Actually, the CITA show is the most likely release occasion - because it might temper the press coverage of competing handphone manufacturers.]
