Posted On: Wed, 19/10/2005 - 07:06 by Alex

Continuing to push the boundaries of mobile phone design, Nokia has introduced a collection of three trend-inspired mobile phones, the Nokia 7360, Nokia 7370 (pictured above) and Nokia 7380. Each model in the L'Amour Collection offers a beautiful mix of contrasts - infusing cultural and ethnic influences with luxurious touches of the unexpected. Hints of vintage and craftsmanship, are fused with natural materials, colors and patterns, all carefully crafted and layered with a passion for detail...

Read more to see a our roundup, and initial impressions. We updated this post on 20th October when specific phone pages became available on nokia.com

Updated as at 20/10/2005 - Notes:

  • There seem to be typos on the Nokia site.
  • The Nokia 7360 product page says that there is no bluetooth, but there is infrared; the compare phones page says the reverse. We shall assume there is no bluetooth, but there is infrared.
  • The Nokia 7370 product page says that it is quadband; the press release and compare phones page disagrees. We assume it is a triband phone.
  • The Nokia 7370 is more castrated that expected; with a 1.3 megapixel camera with video recording, and support for mp3 playback, but only 10MB of memory and no expansion capability.
  • The 7380 is basically the same size as the 7280 (115 x 32 x 19 mm, 64 cc vs 114 x 30 x 20 mm, 63 c) which means that it is huge.
  • The Nokia 7360 uses the old charger plug; the Nokia 7370 and Nokia 7380 use the new charger plug. We hope the phones using the new charger plug ship with adaptors so that old chargers may also be used.

We have to agree; this set of phones look gorgeous. Unfortunately the specifications are a little skimpy. The Nokia 7370, in particular, would have done well to have a 2 megapixel camera - it would then be a worthy competitor to the previously announced slider phones. As it is, meterosexual men might still select it; but surely the 2 megapixel CMOS module is not any larger than a 1.3 megapixel one? Sacrificing functionality for appearance is so ... Apple

There's one other way that this is kinda... Apple-ish: Note that the Nokia 7370 brings video ringtones to their proprietary OS, Series 40. (Video ringtones were previously available on Symbian Series 60, but only with third-party software.)

The L'Amour Series continues Nokia's tradition of releasing stylish phones in the 7***-series, and is a direct update of the 72**-series fashion phones. This release suggests that the swivel phone is the new flip phone, and confirms several rumours which have been floating around for awhile.

Finally, we would like to take this oppourtunity to congratulate Gizmodo on a perfect scoop.
