Global IP Sound, which makes the codec that powers the Skype client, has announced VoiceEngine Mobile for Symbian OS, which will help in the creation of products that are easy to use and provide better-than PSTN voice quality even without in-house Voice-over-IP expertise.
This suggests that Skype will provide a Symbian version quite soon - seeing how they currently support all major OS's, including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and Pocket PC. However, note that the hardware requirements are steep - for example the Pocket PC version requires a 400Mhz processor - and no Windows Mobile or Symbian device actually has a processor which works at that speed. The fastest currently shipping Symbian devices (Nokia 6630/6680/6681/6682/N90) use a ~ 220Mhz processor. The Nokia 9500 uses a 150Mhz processor.
Of course, processor speed is not everything, (compare the Pentium M Centrino to the Pentium 4) but I suspect this will be a problem.
