Symbian Limited yesterday announced the the launch of Symbian OS™ version 9. Notable features are: Bluetooth stereo headset support,support for different screen sizes and orientations, and simultaneous multiple displays.
While annoucing all these feaures is a good idea, and provides confirmation that there is indeed a future for the platform (as if that was ever uncertain), our take is that this is all deeply underwhelming without device support; particularly from Nokia. While specific product announcements might have simply be delayed for 3GSM, which is in 11 days, the timing of this is strange. SymbianOne suggests that the early announcement ensures that the "full ramifications of the changes" are not lost in the bustle of 3GSM, and that it is related to the fact that Symbian Limited is not the "center of its own universe." We think some public relations person has messed up.
