The Nokia is a Symbian OS 1.3MP tri-band cameraphone, which might actually be a worthy successor to the Nokia 7610. |

The Nokia 3230 is a new phone running on the Symbian OS. Features-wise, it looks like a worthy successor to the Nokia 7610; no features seem to have been removed (although it will apparently ship with a 32MB RS-MMC instead of 64MB) and it is actually marginally smaller and lighter, with dimensions of 109 × 49 × 19 mm, 110g as opposed to 108.6 × 53 × 18.7 mm, 118g. This reminds us of how the 3650 was the "upgrade" to the 7650.
There are also new features: EDGE compatibility, a 1.23MP effective camera, a hot-swappable memory card (hooray!), and Infrared. Also, the use of a standard keypad should also quell some dissent. (Even though we think that the 7610 keypad is perfectly functional)
In addition, there might be relief from one of the most obvious design gaffes of the 7610: stereo MP3 playback. (It's only might because even though the press report states "Stereo FM Radio and MP3 player"; this may be read disjunctively, and the Nokia 6260 has stereo radio and mono mp3.) We hope and pray that there will also be a standard headphone output, but the chances of that seem vanishingly small. It's also a pity that Nokia seems to have elected to use a joystick instead of a proper directional pad.
Right now, it doesn't look like the phone is going to become available in the US, but Europe, Africa and Asia are in luck.
