Setting Up the Phone

Posted On: Wed, 10/11/2004 - 09:30 by Alex

Advanced Usage tips:

  1. At the top of the main menu and in every folder, the keys 1 to 9 are shortcuts to the icons 1-9.
  2. While writing a message press and hold "#" to switch between Alpha mode and Number mode. You can also press and hold a key to insert its number.
  3. In Standby: press and hold 0 to launch your wap home page.
  4. In Standby: type (*#06#) To display your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity)
  5. Start up with no apps running by holding down the pencil key when you turn on the phone.
  6. The secret menu (*#92702689#) no longer works.

Basic Setup:
This is a list of what you should do after you get your phone and charge up the batteries. This assumes that you have installed PC Suite and know how to connect your phone to the computer.

Welcome to your phone! The first thing you do is press (menu), then use the directional pad to look for the icon called themes. Once you find it, press down on the D-pad.
Change the theme to something which you like. The phone comes with four basic themes, more information about theming can be found here. (I cheated, and actually had my preferred theme loaded onto the RS MMC. ) Once you're done, exit out of "themes" and look for "settings."
Move the selector over the "phone" and press down on the D-pad; there are some options here which should be changed. Select "general."
Enable the T9 dictionary, which enables predictive text. This allows for faster text input. (Manual: Using predictive Text)
Switch the "Welcome note or logo" to "text." This is not at all necessary, but the startup logo takes a few seconds to play, and it is likely that at least some time is saved. Ideally, however, do not ever switch off your phone.
Exit out of the "general' menu, and select the "standby mode" menu.
This allows you to assign shortcuts to your directional pad. My setup is: left selection key - camera; right selection key - Go to; Navigation Right - Calendar; Navigation Left - New Text Message; Navigation Down - Clock; Navigation up - profiles; Selection Key - Contacts. Of course, your frequently used programs might be different.
I think a profiles shortcut is particularly important because of the difficulty of pressing the on/off button; this will allow you to make your phone silent easily.
Exit "Standby Mode" and go into brightness. Set the brightness setting to the lowest comfortable level; this will go some way towards improving battery life.
Exit out of "Phone" and select "Date and Time"
Set the date and time.
There are several more options, including changing the clock tone and the type of clock; I prefer digital to Analogue because the latter is has a rather small dial, making it harder to read.
Exit out of "Date and Time", press down, and select "security." Select "Phone and SIM"
You should change the lock code; this will guard you against unauthorised formatting.
Select a code you can remember. Note that you will need to bring the phone to a Nokia Care Center should you forget the lock code. After this, exit completely out of the "Settings" application, and open "Profiles."
This provides you with a number of customizable options. Select as you see fit. The profile "General" cannot be renamed; if you want your profile to be named, the best profiles to use are those immediately below and above "General", because when you enter profiles that is what will be automatically selected.
Activate your profile. Remember to create a profile which is totally silent.
The last step is to organize your Menu. By default, this is where all applications appear. This makes for a rather full menu. You can organize it though. I suggest using appropriately named folders to organize content, first, create the folder, as shown.
Then, go to each application and select the folder you want to move it to.
You are also able to move applications within the folder.

This was my final configuration. You want to arrange your icons and folders such that there are no more than 9 icons in your menu, (excluding applications freshly installed) This will allow you to make full use of the shortcuts built into the operating system: keys 1 to 9 are shortcuts to the icons 1-9. These shortcut keys also apply within menus; so if you are going to use an application often, keep it either in the root menu, or as one of the first five in a folder.

Once all this is done, you should create a connection to your computer, and synchronize your contacts / calendar with outlook. (presuming you use outlook)
