More information about the Nokia N71

Posted On: Sun, 30/10/2005 - 15:11 by Alex

We've used UAProfiles to (correctly) support assertions that unannounced handsets are about to be launched; and here's the UAprof of the Nokia N71 - nds1.nds.nokia.com/uaprof/NN71-1r100-VFKK2G.xml

Note the "VFKK2G" portion - it (probably) indicates that the device is to be launched in Japan by Vodafone KK. For example, the Nokia 6630, which was launched in Japan to a horrible reception, has two UAProfiles, N6630r100.xml and N6630r100-VFKK2G.xml.

Read on for specifications. We'd also put up live pictures, but we've been politely asked not to...

(The following specification listing is also based upon information from the FCC and other sources. Treat it as rumour though.)

OS: Symbian 9.1
Screen: 320*240 262K colour screen
Bluetooth: Yes
Infrared: Yes
External Storage: MiniSD
Networks: not possible to tell - FCC docs state that it is a GSM 900/1800/1900 WCDMA 2100 device, but this does not seem to guarantee frequencies the device is capable of operating on.
Camera: one VGA, one 2MP with flash but no autofocus.
Notes: Screen layout similar to that of the Nokia E61; 4*3 icons in menu, instead of 3*3. Planned Launch date is likely to be before 10th December 2005. Nokia Mobility Conference 2005 is going to be held on November 2-3.

Note that being available from Vodafone KK does not prevent the Nokia N71 from being available worldwide, and indeed we think that it would be extremely strange if it were meant to be a Japan-only handset. It probably just means that there is going to be a version of the Nokia N71 with cute keys (as pictured). The Japanese market has proven to be a tough challenge to international phone manufacturers, and we don't think the Nokia N71 will be the handset to change the status quo. If you examine the reasons that the Japanese were underwhelmed by the Nokia 6630, you'll see that a large part of the reason was that the interface was simply not friendly enough. Perhaps this will improve with Symbian 9.1, and indeed we hope it does, but our expectations are limited. Smartphones are harder to use, almost by definition.

Oh, and if you still haven't seen the pictures which we were asked to remove, we think Ubergizmo still has them.
