Update: I have since been contacted by Vincent Maduraud from TetraEdge who has informed me that the new Atlantis Redux Ep1+2 corrects some of the flaws I listed in this review, and specifically that all customers who purchased Atlantis Redux Ep1 are eligible to receive an update which adds sound effects and background music. A review of Atlantis Redux Ep1+2 will be completed shortly.

Précis:

Atlantis Redux LogoI'm conflicted. There are elements of a good game, but as it exists now the only saving grace is the extremely low price. I would advise getting this only if you wanted to show off how good pre-rendered graphics can look on a mobile game; possibly when the entire game (as opposed to simply episode 1) is available, this will change. The game seems rather different to the pocket pc version.

Review:

ImageImage 2An adventure game with elements of the classic Myth, it is too short and the linking portions between puzzles are not enticing at all. Actually, to be frank, there are only three (or maybe two, depending on how you count) puzzles, plus you'll be hard pressed to actually find them because the linking portions are so horribly bad. You'll basically be moving around the screen (only left and right, mind) waiting for a cursor change.

I would tell you the story, but that would give away something like 50% of the incentive to buy the game.

Sound is completely nonexistent. There are clicks, and some (very sparse) sound effects, but there is no background music, and basically you'll be listening to the sound of silence. Some sound would actually be nice. I feel the lack of sound detracts from the entire feel of the game.

Image 3The graphics are quite good. Probably acceptable, although the resolution seems to be a tad low. This provides some entertainment, but the story itself is not very involving. If you are of a particular bent, you might find the game to be quite funny, because the English is rather bad. You'll be pleased to learn that your adventurer is "A Big Girl Now!!!" and is sufficiently cool-headed to make comments like "Does that mean you strangle me?" straight-faced. I personally thought she'd be better off dead. Also, there is obviously zero replay value, unless you're very forgetful.

In all, this seems rather different to the pocketpc version of the game, which has received glowing reviews. The screenshots of the pocketpc version do look better.

It is a pity, because tetraedge has made some rather entertaining games (although, admittedly, nothing quite as complex as this), and the pre-rendered graphics would be excellent when combined with a good storyline. The lack of a good storyline, sound, and short game length are a triple knockout.
