HTC Universal Review at MobileBurn

Posted On: Fri, 30/09/2005 - 17:03 by Alex

Mobileburn has just completed an excellent review of the HTC Universal we are tempted to buy. (The HTC Universal is the phone also known as the o2 XDA Exec, iMate JASJAR, Vodafone VPA IV, Qtek 9000, Orange SPV M5000, and T-Mobile MDA Pro. )

Highlights:
1. simply too big and heavy to be considered a regular phone
2. The keys themselves have a good feel, and are easy enough to read
3. Windows Mobile 5.0 does not use RAM for storage, meaning that you will not lose your data if the batteries go completely dead. On top of that, you will gain the full use of the battery's capacity, instead of the system forcefully shutting down when it has only enough power to last for 72 hours in sleep mode, which could mean anywhere from 25 to 50% of the actual battery capacity remains
4. The display rotation system seems to work quite well, and I found no instances of applications not handling the transformation properly.
5. the system to be a bit laggy
6. Call audio quality was good in general
7. can make use of all of its connectivity options at the same time

Read the full review here. If you're in the UK, your best bet for obtaining the device is probably via o2.

Nokia 1600 mini-Review

Posted On: Mon, 05/09/2005 - 16:55 by Alex

It's time to look at the very very new Nokia 1600, which is even CHEAPER than the Nokia 6030 we looked at last week.

The Nokia 1600 has even less snot value, and while it does have some aesthetic appeal (it's curvy! - see pictures after jump), it is most importantly a super budget phone based upon the newest iteration of the Nokia Series 40 interface. To achieve this "super budget" status, however, some cuts have been made.

Nokia 6030 mini-Review

Posted On: Tue, 23/08/2005 - 16:49 by Alex

For some reason or other, we've managed to get our grubby mitts on a Nokia 6030 for awhile. It's a basic budget phone, but still.

Starting off, we'll admit that the 6030 doesn't quite have the snot value of it's luxury cousin, the Nokia 8800, but we will say that it is one of the better looking budget phones around. (See pictures after jump, pity about the overtly boxy exterior; we much prefer sensuous curves like those on the Nokia 6100) More importantly, it is the first budget phone based upon the newest iteration of the Nokia Series 40 interface, and, like it's relatives ...

Atlantis Redux Episode I + II

Posted On: Mon, 20/12/2004 - 20:12 by Alex

Atlantis Redux LogoThe combined Episode 1 + 2 is much better than Episode 1 alone. I was also very impressed by the response of tetraedge to the previous review, and the fact that they upgraded all Symbian Episode 1 buyers to the new Episode 1+2 for free. In any case buying it now you do get an impressive game showpiece, and the puzzles themselves are better and more numerous.

Quartz: Tetriz Pobble Bub (Review)

Posted On: Mon, 20/12/2004 - 12:31 by Alex

Quartz
Quartz is a simple game, but sometimes the simple games are the best. Personally, I could not put it down (for awhile). I've even got proof: Here's a link to the score from my first game. Addictive gameplay combined with an attractive price make this an irresistable deal.

As always, you should always try the demo version first; but in this case there are real advantages to buying the game, especially if you become immersed in it. You get to post your score online!

"Busting Balls" with Li-Nuggz (Review)

Posted On: Tue, 14/12/2004 - 15:32 by Alex

li-NuggzThis game is simply excellent, providing hours of entertainment arranged in bite-sized bits for easy mobile enjoyment. Based upon a simple gameplay concept, which has the player busting balls, this fast-paced action game is a must-have for the Symbian S60 platform.

As a bonus, Elements Interactive has just released a special holiday edition, which is probably very suitable to try, just to see if you like the game. Try that now!

Review - Atlantis Redux: Episode I

Posted On: Mon, 13/12/2004 - 16:58 by Alex

Atlantis Redux LogoI'm conflicted. There are elements of a good game, but as it exists now the only saving grace is the extremely low price. I would advise getting this only if you wanted to show off how good pre-rendered graphics can look on a mobile game; possibly when the entire game (as opposed to simply episode 1) is available, this will change. The game seems rather different to the pocket pc version.

Update: I have since been contacted by Vincent Maduraud from TetraEdge who has informed me that the new Atlantis Redux Ep1+2 corrects some of the flaws I listed in this review, and specifically that all customers who purchased Atlantis Redux Ep1 are eligible to receive an update which adds sound effects and background music. A review of Atlantis Redux Ep1+2 will be completed shortly.

Review - A Bad Day in Space

Posted On: Sun, 28/11/2004 - 12:33 by Alex

Beautifully rendered in 3D; with well thought-out gameplay, humourous intermissions, challenging gameplay and a very apt name (for reasons I shan't get into - plot spoiler), it is ultimately only manages an "average" score; let down by the lack of a save game feature, mediocre replayability, lack of a trial and a high price. This is a good demonstration of the actual 3D capabilities of Symbian phones, but certain frustrating gameplay elements rather detract from the experience.
