Nokia 7610 Guide

Posted On: Mon, 01/11/2004 - 09:24 by Alex

Welcome to the Symplification Nokia 7610 User Guide.

This Guide is meant for Nokia 7610 mobile phone owners but most information will be relevant to other series 60 device owners: e.g. 3660 / 3650 / 6600 / 7650. The Guide is written towards advanced use of the 7610. Basic Usage information is sufficiently covered by the Nokia 7610 User Guide provided by Nokia. This ships with your phone, but it might be preferable to look at the online versions because they provide you with text searching capabilities and are updated. The official Nokia 7610 manuals are available here. However, provided that you are generally familiar with the standard Nokia interface, it will not be necessary to consult the Nokia guide, as we will reproduce certain sections where applicable.

Before we begin, there are three vitally important tasks that you should first complete.

I. Upgrade Firmware:

Latest 7610 firmware: V5.0509.0, 01-03-05, RH-51
Latest 7610b firmware: Unknown

Upgrade your firmware to the latest available. To check your firmware version, exit to the standby screen and type (*#0000#). Upgrades can only be done at a Nokia Care Center; check nokia.com for location information. Before visiting your Care Center, it might be a good idea to call and check if they actually have the latest firmware revision on hand.

There have been at least three firmware revisions for the Nokia 7610, the list below shows the changes in the second; you definitely want to upgrade if you have the older firmware. I'm not sure what changes are in the newest version; I didn't notice anything overtly different during the upgrade.

  1. Fixed: It is now possible to set ringtone volume on maximum and use vibration without issue.
  2. Fixed: The birthday "year" in the Calendar after Outlook Sync is no longer always 1980.
  3. Fixed: The messaging application now saves custom dictionary terms through reboots
  4. Fixed: The messaging application no longer crashs upon input of certain words.
  5. Feature: Assign shortcuts to Directional Pad.
  6. Feature: Responsiveness improved.
  7. Feature: Camera now has option not to show captured image immediately.

II. Obtain and install a useful on-phone file manager:

By this, I mean the excellent FExplorer by Dominique HUGO. This has been released as freeware, and works perfectly (version 1.11) on the 7610. You will require this software in many instances; while the series 60 OS design is quite good, this is needed to smooth out occasional bumps. An easy way to get it is to snag our freeware bundle, at the end of this guide.

III. Upgrade Nokia PC Suite:
Download and install the latest version of the Nokia PC Suite. This is available directly from Nokia, and the current version is 6.4. Ignore the fact that the Nokia 7610 phone support section suggests the download of an earlier version; you do not lose functionality by upgrading.
